Sometimes,we'll sigh..

Back when I was but a toddlin' lad,in the 50's,my older sister was every bit the typical teenager.
Oh yes..Poodle skirts,and saddle oxfords.
Ponytails,and bobbysox,..and American Bandstand!

There's a poem in there someplace...I'll work on it.

In any case, among my earliest memories are of the hours she spent babysitting me,playing over and over the latest and greatest from her grand accumulation of 45's..(That would be 45 RPM records kids..umm..records are those circular vinyl things that,...I digress).

She would very often enlist me as an adoring dance partner.
She taught me how to "Waltz",which I later discovered was actually the "Box Step",to tunes similar to the following...

Let me tell you, this was no easy find.
All the actual video of Buddy Holly is pretty well worn, and the quality of the audio, quite simply, sucks.
So I opted for the sound I remember, and settled for clips to barely qualify this as a Friday Video.

Buddy Holly..."True love ways"

Hat- I told ya straight up,it was no easy task...dammit.
There's plenty more where that came from. :P

I hadn't heard this particular Buddy Holly song.

Thanks for bringing the youth around to this gem.

Have a great weekend!

danielle- Buddy was one of the first "rock and roll" types to use orchestration in his songs...
..and I could go on and on but,..you don't know where you are,'till you know where you came from.
I've got a 3 day weekend!..Woo Hoo!

What a great contrast to the noise made on the airways today. Oops, do I sound aging. OK, I am.

jan- We're younger now, than we'll ever be again.
So here's the deal..I'm trying to keep things in perspective.
No doubt, this generation's music means as much to them,as our generation's music meant to us.
If it speaks to the hearts and minds, inspires them to seek out,and participate in,the union of thoughts and ideals, then I want to be part of that.
It's difficult at times,to relate to some of the things that seem to be foremost in the concerns of our youth.
That is probably a good thing,in the long run.
Change is preferable to stagnant thinking.
Having said that..Rap music sucks.

True Love Ways is my favorite Buddy Holly song. Sad that I have favorites?? I'm only 34! But, nonetheless, it's my favorite. I contemplated dancing to it at my wedding in fact. Settled for Etta James' At Last.

I should have been born in 1943 instead of 1973.

Love,
Julie

I wouldn't exactly call Etta James,"settling"..In fact, had I been at your wedding,I would have eagerly volunteered to dance with the bride.

Personally, I think a photo montage makes a perfectly wonderful video. And that has absolutely nothing to do with anything over at my site.

more cowbell- I saw that!..and I totally agree.
Music was invented long before MTV and VH1..I don't even mean to take away from the artistic beauty of a well executed video..we just didn't have the technology back then to express the feeling.

EDIT: I mean that.
There are so many songs that are truly enhanced by video tech, that I sorely wish it could have been applied decades,..hell,centuries before hand..
Can't you just see Stephen Foster's interperetation of ,"My old Kentucky Home?"..Wondermous!

Sweet memories, excellent tune. Funny thing though is that every time I hear oneof these stories of your youth I keep picturing you as this adorable little tyke with a mustache.

Whew....sounds like I am only old enough to be your sister....NOT your mother....I am old enough for that pretty much with everyone else.

I had a HUGE collection of 45's....all numbered and filed in a special 45 holder...and a 5 stack 45 player....we were rich in the important ways...with music.

Hahahaha on Lorraine. Hopefully he didn't pick up the cigarette part until later.

doralong-..It seems like a compliment..

kimberly ann- well I'm glad you enjoyed them!

lorraine- I can't actually prove I didn't have one!..No pictures of me exist without it.

rosie- You must have had that cylinder thing that slipped over the post that the 33's went on,that allowed you to que 5 45's huh!..We had that too.
Also, those little plastic doohickeys that snapped in the hole of the 45's so that you could play them one at a time..Good times!

more cowbell-Now I have to tell you a story!
When I was about 7 I had an older neighbor kid,Dennis, that got me to try one of his dad's cigarretes.
I ended up getting really sick to my stomache, and my mom said maybe I should go to the doctor.
Well,I figured they would x-ray my stomache, and find smoke in there, and then I would get in trouble for making my parents spend money on the doctor...so I 'fessed up to smoking...Thinking back on that,I'm pretty sure it was just a mom ploy.

my older sister and her friends had their way with me too!

it weren't easy being a younger brother in the 50's.

At 3:19 PM , Blogger Sling said...

the rube- Personally,I blame the entire 60's on big sisters from the 50's.

Buddy Holly and the early rock 'n' roll was no lighter than the way I play. It's very minimal.

I had just turned 15 and had been really sick with some coughing alergy thing and had been sick in bed for about a week..all I did was listen to the radio..and they came on and said Buddy Holly, Richi Valens and the Big Bopper had been killed in a plane crash...I cried and cried and cried...they played nothing but their music for days ...still makes me sad...
