Metric Confusion..

Back when I was in grammar school, before computers, before cell phones,hell,..even before Hamburger Helper, there was a whole lot of talk about converting to the metric system.
The thinking was, that it would be a good idea to become accustomed to using the same standards of measurement that the whole rest of the world was using.
This made some sense to my young self,so I was willing to go the whole 9 meters in an effort to adapt.I figured,in for a penny,in for half a kilogram, know what I'm sayin'?
It might just help us to better understand our global neighbors, and by my way of thinking,18 grams of prevention is worth 288 grams of cure any day!
The whole idea fell by the wayside however.Popular resistance was just to strong."Give 'em a millimeter, and they'll take a kilometer!" Grandpa proclaimed.
Sitting here today,on God's little hectare,I think Grandpa was probably right. Our current system is woven into our collective psyche,an integral part of who we are as Americans.I figure if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
And I say that, without a milliliter of regret.

Sling, I remember the discussions about converting to a metric system as well. Everyone was shaking in their boots, not looking forward to it.

But in the end, lots of things were converted -- when's the last time you bought a quart of Coke? It's been a liter for at least a decade. But gas is still by the gallon.

And, of course, drugs were always by the gram (instead of ounce) ... even in school before we even knew the metric system existed -- but maybe this is because America gets most of its drugs from countries that use the metric system?

dan-My brother was terrible at math, but he could tell you how many grams of cocaine were in a ton without blinking.
Change is creeping up on us,centimeter by centimeter.

Having someone not from here living with me I have learned-- or remembered how to convert fahrenheit to celsius. I thank God for the Ray Rayner show back in the 70's, he would give both every day!

I just think metrics are too clinical.
Our system has color and flavor.I wanna hear that the newborn was a healty 7 lbs. 8 oz. baby boy/girl,...not 3.5 kilos.

Celcius sucks. My computer's core temps are in celcius. Instead of learning how to do it though I just have a program I can type a temp in and it converts it for me. I'm lazy like that. hehe

grish-some news weather people only give the temps in celsius,..That sucks.

I'm hopeless with metric conversions. The other day the pediatrician said The Child weighed 40 kilos. I have no idea what that makes her worth on the open market.

Oh, and btw, I like the new picture. I'm not sure how JP will feel about it, but when it is rendered really itty bitty like that, it's very cute.

I used to sell Metric watches to college kids- the dial was numbered 1 to 10, representing the 10/hr- 100/min metric time system, or, as my crime-partner called it- the "Euro-Day".
We purchased many grams with our profits and never gave any refunds.

as young entreprenuers in the canabis business we took to the metric system like a fish to water.

it was great educational tool.

And you may see me tonight with an illegal smile
It don't cost very much, but it lasts a long while

Tech drawing was a nightmare for me in college- not only having to use metric or convert older plans but having to scale them down for the drawings- arghh! Talk about a headache.
lol on the 'icicles from my mustache,it's damm cold!'

Bests,

I would walk 500 kilometres doesn't have the same ring as I would walk 500 miles.

Babies are still referred to in the pounds and ounces for the most part...well going by the birth notices in the paper.
