Feeling a little small these days..

It's about an hour and a half trip from our base camp in Fort Bragg,(AKA..North O-Town),to the Redwoods.

Half of that time is spent winding up Hwy. 1 along the coast.

Poor Little Newt got carsick along the way,so when we stopped to let him out of the car to have his Yak attacks,I seized the opportunity to snag some seascapes..

Newt recovered nicely,(no more gameboy while driving!),and we troopered on..

..first things first upon entering the woods..You HAVE to do the requisite tourist shots..
Driving thru the drive-thru tree..This honey is 315 feet tall, and 2,400 years old!

...still alive and kickin'.

..standing in the hollow fallen log..

The one-log house.

..Bilbo wasn't home..

Then we head North,to the breathtaking 32 mile long,"Avenue of the Giants.

Okay,..here's the hard part.

How do you capture the utter magnificence of these ancient living giants with a crappy little digital camera?

You try a couple of shots using Little Newt for perspective... Assuming you can get the little scoundrel to stand still..

...or maybe a shot looking straight up!

None of these things can adequately represent the way that being there makes you FEEL.These wonderful trees have stood an average of 600 years, while we've gone about the business of ..well...whatever business it is that we pretend to be about.

OH!...And speaking of pretending..

There is a lovely and engaging tour group from Tokyo that will be going home, happily convinced that they've had their picture taken with:

Famous person Gene Shalit..or,

Famous person Amir Peretz....They just can't quite put their finger on it.. ;)

I took my boys to see the redwoods out your way a few years ago. That's the good kind of feeling small. And young, for that matter!

Yep, those redwoods are pretty much something you have to see to believe. We went when The Child was a zygote. It was awesome. Although, that one shot looking up...that's pretty cool.

Thank you for not sharing seascapes of the yarkfest.

And please, please, please give us more details about the tourists. Please.

Now there's a tree I'd have to hug. Magnificent.

I wonder if logging representatives get twitchy when viewing these bewdies...thinking of all the bucks they could make out of one let alone acres of them.

arhaaha I was just thinking Slingoh when yer getting yer photies taken by the tourists...you could actually let out a james lee [arhaaa I mean bruce] squeal and then kick the shit out of them and take their gear aye.

Not that you would but that struck me as funny that YOU could.

They might have thought you were a skinny Tony Orlando or the Ponch guy...they're pretty cool. The redwoods are beyond magnificent. I have a pic of my grandmother from some decade long past standing in the tree with her little black hat, pocketbook, cotton stockings and tie up grannie shoes...cool place. I live in the forest and while I don't have anything that even comes close to the redwoods there are some pretty fine cedars, hemlocks and tamaracks.....damn you could have driven over here and stayed for free.

Amazing...just amazing. A living thing that has been alive for well over 2,000 years...imagine that.

Your little Newt liiks like one of the little people buzzing past that tree...

so well before the time of Christ, in the middle of the Romanisation of Europe, Egypt, and other places, this tree was just a kid.

Blown away.

great pictures. it's nice that you got to experience them before:

They took all the trees
Put em in a tree museum
And they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see em
Dont it always seem to go
That you dont know what youve got
Till its gone

great pictures. i need to see the one log house in person and live in it. then i could trick people into thinking i am an eccentric ex-celeb who dropped out of the spotlight only to retreat to life in a one log house.

Man, even with a crappy camera the subjects are so breathtaking the aura comes across. My favorites are the deadwood or scraggly tree near the ocean and the one log house door. I would love to visit and just be in the presence of nature's creation. Thanks for giving me a taste.
Mmmmmmmm

...That picture is actually seawood rooted on a Mussell shell, not more than about 10 inches high.It had a "Bonsai" feeling that appealed to me.

Poor wee Newt. He'll remember this holiday for all the wrong reasons-lol. Just kidding. The sea pics are truly stunning. So there's the wean puking his guts up and you happily snapping away- hmm..
Fantastic trees- really super sized! Must have felt like a cathedral standing there in the trees.
So glad you had a great time away- much deserved.
