What's with all the sirens?

We could hear them coming like gangbusters...
O-Town has joined the community of small towns, with huge whackos.

According to Action News;

"Friday morning, a student at Las Plumas High School took several classmates and a teacher hostage. He was upset over a break-up with his girlfriend. Classmates identified the suspect as 17-year-old Greg Wright. It started 9:15 this morning. Witnesses say Greg Wright went in to the band room and fired two shots. No one was hit. Students tell Action News that the suspect had been disgruntled over his breakup with his girlfriend. The suspect pointed the gun at a substitute teacher and took at least four people hostage.By 10:45 all hostages were released and the suspect is in custody. Parents picked up students at the Church of the Nazarene located at 2238 Monte Vista Avenue, south of Las Plumas High School.Crisis counselors and youth service counselors are at the Southside Community Center located at 2959 Wyandotte Avenue in Oroville. They are available for anyone who wants to talk with them."

Got a gripe?..Well hell, grab a gun and go take it out on your classmates.
Naturally,we all talked about this at work. Each of us speculating on the possible causes of this behavior, which seems to be more and more prevalent in this country.
Personally,I don't think he was given enough "time outs" as a child...Time out being defined as the time it takes out of a parent's busy day to whip the tar outta the little bastard every time he willfully disobeys...just my opinion.

Anyway..My neighbor just got a new laptop, and I promised to help him set it up.This could take a while.
After which,I'll get down to the business of visiting the residents of Bloggertown...It's Friday,..and life is temporarily being held hostage in Sling's Domain.

Slingman..that was in your neck of the woods? Oh my. Teaching has become a very hazardous profession; bus duty being extremely volatile and downright insane!

We have a cold front that has moved in...snow is on the mountain already, and it will drop to the 30's tonight in the prairie. A good night to stay in, put a few logs on and work on that laptop with your friend. Sometimes it's best to just tune the world out for awhile. Enjoy your weekend!

You know my dad was a professional shooter - pest control etc and also we ate many wild ducks...cheap and full of bits... but the guns were alwauys stored behing mum and dad's bed...never found or even bothered wondering where the bullets were kept...with a house full of kids dad would have made darn sure they were no where near the guns...

no one shot up schools or freaked out and thought it was aok to threaten other's lives because they had spat the dummy...

you don't always get what you want (thanks Jagger) and thats learnt age two when you have older sisters and a mum and dad who care.

I heard about that on the news. Which is, of course, where these stupid, unimaginative idiots get their ideas. He'll be a media star for a while before they smack his hands.

Yikes. I really fear for kids these days. Although, a hundred years ago there were gunfights in the streets over suspected poker cheats so, has anything really changed?

Okay, this is so un-PC, but I agree with you on the "time outs". Everyone is going to blame guns again, but I know way too many people who grew up with guns, who wouldn't have ever DREAMED of touching them or they'd have the holy hell beat out of them. Not only that, guns had a purpose - either target or trap shooting, or hunting. Period. They weren't a toy, they weren't a mystery. Dad took us shooting often enough - and made us clean the gun afterward - that we had no overwhelming urge to mess with them when no one was looking. In addition to the "not enough time outs", we have to stop playing all this stuff up on TV. Kids today all want their 15 minutes, hence the YouTube beating videos and stuff like this incident. What a world...

it is a crazy world today isn't it? no chance for sanity on the horizon.

if every kid in the school had a gun maybe mr wright would have thought twice about taking hostages.

think any of the students are on drugs? maybe i ought to retract my suggestion until mission accomplished can be declared in the war on drugs.

I'm inspired to go beat the tar out of The Child just for good measure. There's probably something she's done that she snuck under the radar.

I always say the hardest part of parenting is other parents.

cs- Yep..That happened right here in O-Town.Practically everyone I know here went to that school growing up.
My friend really has no computer savvy at all,so we're literally starting with,"Okay..Now press enter.."

middle child- Pops had a couple of hunting rifles as I recall. It never once crossed our minds to go anywhere near them, let alone think about actually picking them up.

jan- He's about to discover that,in the real world, they don't send you to your room to play video games when you act the fool.

Hat- Nothing has changed,we still shoot poker cheats here in O-Town.That's a given.

gina- I think that many people imagine the extreme when it comes to advocating corporal punishment...I'm not talking about a bloody beating, just the swift and certain reminder that some things are unacceptable in civilized society.
The whole 15 minutes of fame thing is something I think about. With all the good things that come with our technology, there is always going to someone that wants to twist it into something perverse..I don't know what to do.

merelyme- I like to believe that sanity will out in the end,it's just that insanity gets all the press.

rube- UPDATE!..Two unarmed sisters that were among his hostages, talked him into giving up his gun..no shit.

lorraine- Oh,I just can't imagine The Child contmplating any sort of misbehavior,so I wouldn't think a whippin' is in order...Some backbreaking labor, and food deprivation however...

Wow. It is scary how this seems to be on the increase. My dad was a cop, and his off-duty gun was in the house. We never would've considered messing with it. I do think Gina's "time out" thoughts are valid. I'd further say that attention BOTH ways seems to be lacking in both of these kids' lives. In a lot those situations it seems these kids were ignored. THey probably lacked discipline and positive attention. Kids, though they won't admit it, feel secure when they have some boundaries, because it means that someone gives a shit.

Sad story.

more cowbell- You've brought up an excellent point about giving positive attention.Surely if a child has grown up with a positive self-image,they would be more apt to respect other people.

sin't it crappy when the 'real world' inters your own little domain...we have had a bomb threat at a schol..(just a pissed off kid who wanted off from school)..6 kids killed in car accidents or drug/alcohol related deaths in a 2 year period..and this weekend some drunk raped a 19 year old girl somewhere here in town...I really do wish it was 1957....

Hey Sling! Thanks for commenting!! I heard about this on the news while I was buying stuff for dinner at the little mom-n-pop store up the road. This is why people homeschool their kids! This is also why I say: Good, bad or indifferent my kids are afraid of me. Not on a regular basis - don't come beating down my door everyone - but they know when they do something wrong, they're gonna get it. So guess what - my kids are pretty well behaved!

Love,
Julie

us poor guys have not defense against a pair of sweet talking sisters.

he should have emptied his other gun before leaving home.

You know sling, when I heard this story I thought....here we go again...and then I started thinking about how I coped with issues in high school...hell, I slept with boys...what a better solution! Or else 4 of us girls would get some guy to buy us a 6 pack of CC and we'd get shitfaced on a can and a half and laugh at our problems. I really just don't know what to make of the gun thing with kids. Are we worse parents? Is the school bully bigger and better, were we smarter, prettier and therefore had it better? Was it because our folks worked at blue collar jobs and higher education was not a given, that we had to work for what we wanted....what the hell is it? It's that damn hippy music and them electronics, that's it!!!

I read about this in the middle of other shit - it was feeling like a floor or maybe a ceiling was collapsing somewhere. ANYWAY, and I swear big time to this, I thought ... well it's a good thing that someone like Sling lives around there because of all the obvious solid, cool, peace and good humor reasons.

No, I SWEAR that's what I thought.

What a scary situation. And one that happens all too frequently these days, unfortunately.

As for the real teacher of the class, what a great day not to show up to work. Has to suck for the sub, though.

We had a school shooting here in our itty bitty county last year, at the middle school. Frtunately, one of the boys managed to shoot his buddy in the leg before they got to their intended target, a teacher. It chills my soul.

Remember the old 'Funky Winkerbean' strip where the school's Hall Monitor had a machine-gun bunker?

That used to be a joke.
