Fireside Chat
It seems we're experiencing 'the Summer that never was' here in the North State.
Smoke and haze from the numerous wildfires in the area have kept the skies above O-Town saturated with ash for the better part of a month, and yesterday,it got worse...
The above photo was taken outside our shop at 12 noon today. What you don't see here,is the ubiquitous flat-top mountain that should be dominating the horizon.
While the loss of property has been kept to a relative minimum these past several weeks, record high temperatures (in the one-teens),low humidity, and winds gusting up to 40 miles an hour provided conditions for the perfect firestorm...More than 40 homes were consumed just last night!
The worst of the fires stands at 0% containment, even as we speak.
Guess I really can't bitch about the friggin' perpetual stench of burning countryside in the face of what others are dealing with,..so I won't.
***In Other News***
I've passed this road sign on my way to work every day for three years, and never really read it 'till today..
It appears that if you are in a vehicle more than 15 inches high, and 5 feet wide, you're just up shit creek!..
Sometimes,..it's like that.e that.

you know by next summer lifetime tv channel will have a movie of the week about the calif fires. paramount will have wil smith, and tommy lee playing firefighters..and the new survivor show will show regular people trying to put out forest fires for $1million dollars...
sad but true...wishing you rain and some relief..
We get the Calif. TV stations....the fires are beyond horrible. As for shit creek....been there and yup, I had to lay sideways to jump in.
So sorry about the fires--that really does suck!
But the sign is funny. :)
Oh,you can bet Hollywood is gonna capitalize on all this drama.
I'd like to see Sean Connery in there, and maybe Condoleeza Rice could make a cameo appearance as 'the hooker with a heart of gold'..
Now step away from the computer, and take care of your back!
Rosie- It seems it hasn't been this bad in anyone's memory.
Doesn't look like the next few days are gonna be much better either.
MHP- It's 10 on the suck scale!
..and I'm still tryin' to figure out what the hell the sign is trying to tell me.
Holy little child of the devil, the fires are horrible. The air quality is probably really bad for the crazy children too.
And the sign crack me the hell up...I love our public workers in our wonderful state. Now pray to the hindu god of Pacific Northwest rains and let her spray upon the fire.
Shit I am drunk
Up shit creek without a paddle Sling... My VW with pop top can't acess some of the older shopping centres so am very aware of checking heights...
Like you now - I am very aware of the issues surrounding bushfires... it is always in the back of your mind in summer here - the trick is for people hoping to "green the earth" not to do it in the suburbs. One tree to give shade near the house is fine - but planting trees to satisfy Al Bore's fantasies of Global warming - well at least plant them all well away from human habitation to release O2...
especially eucalyptas trees which have been planted in California - Australian Gum trees (eucalyptas trees are bad news big time for fires because of duh! eucalyptas oil what else... just freakin explodes of the top of those trees. California is covered in these trees these days courtesy of some mad environmentalist shmucks.
Sage- Hey!..You sound just like me!
You know,..whenI'm hammered. ;)
middle child- We don't have many eucalyptus trees in NorCal.
Oak,Manzanita,Pines, and our world famous Sequoias and Redwoods (which are extremely fire resistant)..
It does seem that poor logging practices back in the day have resulted in trees growing too close together, which is a major factor in the spread of the fires.
Damn, that's scary! Hope all your friends remain safe and housed! May the Goddess bring rain very soon!
Loved the sign. Fires suck.
i hope no movie stars lose their houses in the fires. in these times of uncertainty, we need all the movie stars we can get.
Blogging changes the way I watch disaster unfold on the telly...it makes it scarier and more personal. Stay safe everyone, wherever you are...
Damn, guess I won't be driving my pancake car out ot see you.
(Wish I could send soem of our rain your way. We need it, but clearly you need it more.)
Wow. Sucks, sucks and more sucks. 0% containment. Shit.
We, too, are warned of a weekend with high temps/low humidity and winds, but at least - fingers, toes and stray brain threads ALL crossed - it's facing away from the humans now.
One big shift in the winds, though ...
Are all your services oki-doki and up and running? I mean the 'help services'? Do people have places to go? Do refugees have safe haven to turn to?
Please send overflow down here. We're geared up for you all.
I take all my dire predictions back. Apparently, we're over 50% contained now and so ... all's good.
Down here, I mean.
you're just up shit creek!..
without a paddle" thats the rest of it
