The Donna Reed Show!..

Brought to you by Campbell's soup.

We have a Friday video twofer today kids!

Back when I was (you guessed it) a toddlin' lad,it was a well known fact that mothers wore high heels,figure-flattering dresses, and an understated string of pearls, while going about the business of raising perfectly ideal children, and keeping an immaculate house for their successful husbands.

June Cleaver..
Harriet Nelson....
And Donna Reed were clear examples of the typical American nuclear family matriarch.

Yeah,yeah,..that's a naive vision of the way things truly were, and are in most cases, but it's my childhood, and I'll embrace all the fantasies the black-and-white remembrances of my formative years can abide..

Speaking of fantasies...
Is it possible for a 9 year old pup to have a genuine crush on an older woman?

Yep...

No,..I'm not talkin' about Donna, although I really did think she was beautiful, even then.
Sadly, she was married, and we had scrupulous morals back in the early 60's!
...look it up.

Any pre-pubescent-I-don't-know-what-it-is-but-there's-something-about-Mary,..I'm talkin' about that flaxen haired sultry songstress, and teenage heart throb,Mary Stone!
..AKA, Shelley Fabares.

..check out the look Donna gives 'Johnny'..Priceless!

'Johnny Angel'

I must have her!..

We'll get married.
I'll become a world famous pediatrician!..
We'll have two perfect children, and one day,my own son will pay homage to my sterling character with this touching tribute.

'My Dad'

Things change as they are prone to do,and the best laid plans yada,yada..

Still,we'll cling unerringly to those things that make up the fundamental tenets of our nature, however naive.
Even if they are the grainy, flickering images of a time that never really was.

It's circa 1962,or thereabouts,..and life was good in little Sling's Domain.

You need to rent "From Here to Eternity." Donna Reed was a whore. A most convincing whore. So don't tell me about that domestic crap she tried to pull off.

The wholesome love interest of Jimmy Stewart in,'It's a wonderful life'??

Jesus Jan be careful you might start something here.

We didn't get tele till I was about to go to high school in 1967. So I missed those ones, but I do remember sitting and watching the test pattern so I could see every minute of Rin Tin Tin and Rusty or the Lone Ranger.

My all time favourite was Red Skelton

And yes I did see the look she gave Johnny - thats a classic.

Don't fret doll,.jan can do no wrong. :)

..You forgot 'Sky King'..
Penny was a total hottie!..

Red Skelton was my Dad's favorite show.
Tuesday nights, after Huckleberry Hound,..Sponsored by Kellog's corn Flakes...
I would shine his brown shoes during 'Gertrude and Heathcliff',and rest assured in the knowledge that I was contributing to the family dynamic.

Did you ever notice that all those perfect TV couples slept in twin beds? My parents had to share the same bed. I wondered why they didn't each have their own.

well being a precocious little gay boy I always wanted to be Johnny Crawford and live with Chuck Connors - seemed the perfect set up to me, of course I didn't broadcast that around town - I was precocious not stupid.

Apparantly Donna Reed hated the character she had to play on TV - felt it was demeaning to women and tried them to change things a bit. She was a bit ahead of her time on that one.

I adored her in It's a Wonderful Life!

billy P.- We all had a crush on Samantha.I always thought Darren was a huge putz for not taking advantage of the whole magic thing..what an asshole.

mom- I always wondered about the logistics of having two beds.
I mean, where did little Ritchie Petrie come from?

willym- My big sister told me she was gonna marry Chuck Connors back in his 'Rifleman' days!
She ended up marrying an army drill seargent, and then a policeman.
Probably had something to do with their big guns.

Lost- Oh,she was easy to adore! :)

Little Sling, Big Sling. Life is usually good in your domain. I love that.

I have a very very vague memory that Donna Reed must have been from Iowa. Damn. Now I've got to go a'googling. Hold on.

Yep. Donna Reed. ANYWAY. She started a foundation and all the Iowans who collected and over-polished antique furniture brought it out to California, hoping to sell to the very rich and makes loads of money for their organization. Shelley was their honorary Big Shot.

1. The Iowans completely underestimated how cheap rich Californians are. The auction did not go as well as they'd dreamed.

2. Shelley was beeeeoooootiful.

End of story.

booda babe- Oh,I've worked enough in the service industry, bartending, waitering and such,to know that rich Californians are such friggin' tight asses, you couldn't pull a needle outta their butt crack with a pair of pliers...
Plus!..Last time I looked,Shelley was still a livin' doll! ;)

I was allll about Hugh O'Brian. Though Chuck Connors was pretty hot too. And lest we forget, Steve Reeves! I can't tell you how many Saturday mornings I whiled away watching those Hercules movies.

BTW, I thought I was the only one who remembered sponsors. Mr. Ed was brought to you by Studebaker, maker of the Studebaker Lark! And Wagonwheel was sponsored by Pall Mall, back in the day when cigarette companies could still advertise.

Isn't it amusing to think back on our teenage crushes, isn't it? :)

I used to have SUCH a crush on Billy Joel. Then I saw him and Elton John in concert (great show), and it occured to me how humble Elton appeared compared to Billy. I haven't liked him since.

I still get giggly over Hugh Beaumont (aka Ward Cleaver). That dude was hot. Explains much, doesn't it.

C'mon Willym. Dinah Shore! America is calling at your door.

I'm trying to remember some other sponsors, but I'm drawing a blank right now as to who Philip Morris sponsored. George and Gracey?

Sage- You know what I love about you?..I'll tell ya what I love about you.
..You'll dance naked to just about anything!
That's a fine quality in a friend. :)

kimberly ann- Makes perfect sense to me kid.
Chicks dig a guy in a skinny black tie that sells insurance..hard to compete with.

evil G.- Oh ,..I was just dyin' to answer that!.
She made the song famous fer chrissake.
I remember the 'Call for Phillip Morris'..commercials but I forget which program was sponsored by Pall Mall..
Peter Gunn?

citizen- Of course when I say I'm gonna marry Shelley,I mean that in a purely hypothetical sort of,what if I really could, wouldn't that be totally cool! kind of imaginary sense that has nothing to do with my promise to you that was made in good faith and...Hey!..Look over there!..
