This ain't nothin' new Rush,..but how would YOU know?

We're aren't much for going to the doctor in my family.
Growing up,Pops had two standard responses to all those bumps,bruises,headaches,and minor traumas young misbehavers are likely to incur;

  • 'Rub some dirt in it!',..or my very favorite,
  • 'It'll feel better when it stops hurtin',..and he was right.
Consequently,it takes some pretty serious circumstances to get me to make the move to actually ask for help from the medical community.
In the last 30 years,I've gone to the hospital three times.

The most recent was for a professional opinion on a rather nasty staph infection that I'd had treated at a local clinic.(Okay, maybe that counts as a fourth time, even though the whole thing took about 10 minutes).
In any case,I went to the local community hospital and was instructed to wait for an available physician.
EIGHT-I-KID-YOU-NOT-HOURS-LATER!..The doctor called me into the exam room, looked at my wound, and said,'That's coming along fine'...
He put a fresh gauze bandage on it,and sent me on my way.
...The next week I got a bill for over $800.00.
Ain't private health care great!

The two previous times I crawled into a hospital were each for the same thing.

Both times,I had been enduring the excruciating pain and vomiting that quite naturally occurs when trying to pass kidney stones for over 24 hours.
Both times, the admitting Nurse took one look at me,and rushed me straight into the exam room.('Don't worry about the paperwork,..We'll do that later!')
Both times,I was being examined by a Doctor in less than three minutes.
Both times,I received a quality of care and attention I still find remarkable to this very day.
The total cost for treatment, prescriptions, and follow ups?
..$0.00 dollars.

That's because I'm a veteran,and both times I went to VA Hospitals.
I'm pretty sure that falls under the category of 'Government run health care'.

Maybe if you had ever actually served your country Rush,..you'd know that.

Pretty sure Rush doesn't have to wait in any lines to get his under-the-table painkillers.

/sigh

I have yet to hear a good reason not to nationalize or whatever the correct term would be.

Everyone I've heard naysay so far seems to be talking in circles..

Rush is a fear monger. I can't figure out anyone listens to him. To quote my very intelligent daughter, Rush is an ass.
Our health care system is a mess and I have no idea how it should be fixed.

rush is an asshole and deserves a fate worse than death..he deserves no insurace policies..bastid..
i was raised in the military..you only went to the dr or hospital if there was lots of blood involved..and generaly they just gave us APC'S which we called all purpose capsules...snake bite? APC, brain lesion?, APC..if it was really bad they gave you penicillin..

Rush and others like him are spreading fear to further their own celebrity. Pretty sure there's a special place in hell for people like him. Watching these town meetings I wonder about the sanity of these people.

JP- Exactly!..He was born into privelege, and figures the rules don't apply to himself.
Every time I hear his intro 'Talent on loan from god' I wanna take a sledge hammer to the radio.

Grish- In truth,I need to do a whole lot of thinking on the subject.
I do know there are templates out there we can draw from, discuss, and tailor to the legitimate needs of Americans.
The naysayers are only concerned with serving themselves.

Mom- Your daughter has crystallized my thoughts eloquently!

Yellerdawg- I don't doubt for a minute that there are horror stories out there around the VA healthcare system...I never experienced any myself.
What Rush needs to think about when he rants 'Government needs to stay out of the healthcare business',is that they are,and have been in the business for decades with a great measure of success.
Wakter Reed Army Hospital,Bethesda Naval Hospital,..these facilities set the standard for the whole world.
..that's all I'm sayin'.

Thinker- Sanity doesn't enter into the equation with these so-called grass roots protesters at town hall meetings.
Insurance lobbyists, medical corporations, and the greedy politician's they funnel millions of dollars to on the other hand...

ummm...I was a nurse..as was Mom....we were in the trenches so to speak. If ever there was something that needed fixing, it is health care. I was a Case Manager the last years of my career....it was always about the bottom line, not the patient. Insurance companies with ninnies behind a computer looking at test result ranges called the shots. Generalists took over the job of your personal doc if you were in the hospital....paid for by the IPA,PPA, HMO etc. It was always...get 'em outta here and I don't care where you send them just not on the insurance companies dollar. I hated that job, was brain fried and in 1998 left nursing never to look back.

PS...Rush and Ann Coldturd are asses of the deepest brown.

Rosie- I can see how my post may have come off as an indictment of the medical professionals at the community hospital..Totally my bad!
There's no doubt in my military mind that they are frustrated by having to work under the restrictions placed on them by the bean counters at the insurance companies.
This is why those special interests are so afraid of health care reform, and why we need it,in some form,so desperately.

The Gardener's Cottage- Hi Janet!..

Billy P.- I sent 'em $200.00(Holy Crap!..for a friggin' band-aid),and washed my hands of it.

I've got literally thousands of dollars in medical bills I'm paying off for a biopsy, surgery, and lab results because, as a self-employed person, I can't get decent insurance. I'm a health care provider who can't get adequate health care. We NEED a national health care system.

Secret Agent Woman- Imagine how much more weight input from people like yourself, and Rosemary that are immersed in our healthcare system has on the argument for serious reform!
More convincing than say,the inane ramblings of the displaced far right doomsayers whose only agenda is to undermine any effort that might prove successful on the part of our current administration.
Thanks for helping to put the issue into genuine perspective!

Rainey- Next,we can talk about the home I bought in 1976 that my children were raised in.
I never could have done it if the G.I. Bill hadn't backed the low interest loan!
Pesky ol' government meddling in the banking business you know.

Sage- Good luck..Rainey can get pretty territorial about her soapbox. ;)

Middle Child- Kidney stones are pretty predictable.
First you DIE..Then you get better.

Sling.. I am a Nurse.. in a Trauma ICU.. i LOVE my patients and families, most of my pts are poor, dirt poor. I give them the BEST care in the USA. VA hospitals are excellent run, very efficiently run. WE need some kind of nationalized health care to save hospitals that take care of the poor and ,middle class. .. the middle class!!! Wealthy people have nothing to worry about, and they should. shut the f--k " up! I am sorry you had to ait so long... but ospitals are busy... no one WANTS you to wait that long... it is just because they are SOOOOO busy. We need, and want help. Help us, nurses and doctors, that love our patients and love our work... help us... to give better health care. Please.

At 7:04 PM , Blogger Sling said...

austexgrl- You know what I did?
I'll tell you what I did.
I most aggregiously implied that the hospital employees were the root of the problem...That was not my intention.
I wanted to make the point that, contrary what to the 'Just say no' Republican's are spewing,Obama isn't trying to implement some kind of government takeover of health care, and that there are already highly successful government programs in place to use as a foundation for public healthcare options.
The simple truth is that the insurance and pharmaceutical interests are scared to death that a public option wiould cut into their bttom line of profits, and the politican's that glean millions of dollars in support from those lobbys could care less if you and I have access to reasonable care,go bankrupt from a catastrophic illness,or drop dead..

Man, you ROCK! I just had to say that. :)

Did I ask you if you've seen the movie "Sicko" yet? It made me mad as hell, and wanting badly to move to Canada, England, or France. It's so sad that America hasn't yet figured this one out.

At 6:21 AM , Blogger Bad Alice said...

Fabulous. I recommend Sicko, too. Even if he exaggerated some points (and I don't know that), there's enough to infuriate you.

I have never spoken with anyone from Canada or England who had a problem with their health care system. They think we're nuts. And we are. I very much want some form of government sponsored health care. Private health insurance would still be available, and I'm sure plenty of people would still take advantage of it. It's not like they wouldn't still have the chance to dip their greedy paws in the market.

I was speaking with a doctor in my husband's family recently, and he said that dealing with multiple insurance companies was insane. All the cost involved in handling the paperwork, all the different fee structures (some of which actually met his costs and some which didn't), doctors feeling pressure to order unnecessary tests to avoid any possible malpractice grievance, which then ups the overall cost of care and encourages the insurance companies to put in place more and more restrictions. Oh, and then having to sort through all the restrictions and referral protocols and all that crap.

Some doctors have abandoned insurance altogether and have set up tiered service structures. That's pretty upfront, isn't it? The more money you have the better service I'll give you. Do you want the bronze, silver or gold plan?

Aargh.

Miss HP- Thanks kid! :)
I did see 'Sicko'.
I'm certain we can come up with something comparable to what those other countries are doing,we just have to ignore the vocal minority whose only agenda is to see Obama fail,
even it's to the detriment of America.

Bad Alice-You know,I'm hearing lots of that kind of feedback from medical professionals, but I'm not really seeing much of it on the news.
Are they out there in force working for a healthcare plan, and the media just isn't covering it?..It would be nice to get the people that are really in the trenches out there to debunk the lies and fear mongering that seems to be taking center stage.
..Do they have a Tin Plan?..I think I could afford that. ;)
