I like to think of it as a sabbatical..
..although technically speaking,it's a lay-off.
Well dont'cha know it's been a tenuous time at our little cabinet shop of late.
Rising fuel costs, and especially the thunderous crash of the housing market have conspired to slow business down to a trickle.
Add to that the crippling cost of worker's compensation, and the lovely K family really had no alternative but to lay-off those three of us remaining after the great purge of December last.
I actually received the news two weeks ago when Mr. K called us together in the shop, and fighting back the tears, laid it on the line.
The guy seriously apologized for 'Letting us down',as if any of us could hold this dear man responsible for the current state of the Union.
..can't be done.
That's the bad news..
The good news,at least for me, exists on several levels.
I'm guaranteed my unemployment insurance.
The paperwork is in,and I'll be compensated in an amount that, while it necessarily precludes any whimsical jaunts to Europe, still covers my humble day-to-day needs.
There is still work to do at the shop that requires me to perform on an 'on-call' basis, for which I'm being compensated as kind of a day laborer,at a dollar an hour increase over my regular pay.
..I worked ten hours last week!
Most importantly, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
The doors are staying open, and our biggest contractors are still building homes.
Granted, they are homes that won't be ready for cabinets for some few months hence, but time passes no matter what you do.
Anysloth...
Worker bee that I am,I expect the the hardest part will be figuring out what to do with myself, given an over abundance of free time.
I mean,I suppose I know what to do with myself,..
I just can't very well do it eight hours a day..

Undoubtedly you will find a creative and legal pursuit to occupy you, sorry for the downturn, but this too shall pass.
Sorry to hear you are among the unemployed. I'm glad to hear that your boss is managing to keep the business going. Ya know he'll hire you back as soon as he gets the work.
Here's hoping for better times soon. I think we are all rightly worried about what will happen next.
aaawww man!! That sucks. Glad you have a good attitude about it.
Ohh, Sling. I am so sorry, and so sorry for your Boss. It is not his fault. We should rest assured though, we are being told "there is no recession."
Now could be the time to begin that long awaited WIP...your life story on paper!
Not without doing yourself some bodily harm, anyway.
But I am seriously sorry - I just don't seem to hear any good stories anymore about the econoy or job situation. It's so dispiriting. I hope things turn around for you very, very soon.
you should start a band...even if you get gigs that don't pay..you'd be filling in the hours and having a good time..
volunteer at the library, i love my time at the library.
learn how to play a new instrument. read a book. THEN you can smoke and whack off..
just saying..
Wow Yellowdog just laid it all out for you. She should work at the unemployment place, she would be a hoot.
Sorry about the slow times. You can go around and tell people not to vote for McCain. That will keep you busy.
What a bummer, they are talking layoffs at my work too. People just aren't flying anymore and the airlines are parking their planes. Bush economics.
oh sling! gay boys do it all day long and some even ger paid for it. i'm not so sure how it works in the straight world but that's something you might look into, no?
i'm sure you have many years of experience in that department.
heehaw!
anyway, enjoy the time off.
Yellowdog Granny has a good idea. You have talent and the world should hear your music.
Sorry about the job.the economy is a mess. Tell people to vote the bums out.
you could become a sarah palin roadie.
or watching tv may be more productive.
Wow, this is some scary economy we're in the middle of. At least you're going to have some income, and that's great. In the meantime, Yellowdog Granny makes some good suggestions.:)
Wow, so sorry, dude!
I hope things look up for you job-wise soon...
In the meantime, you can spend lots of your day on something you're really good at--writing! *smiles*
Bless the K's- what genuinely nice people. Luckily you are a man of many talents, drink slinging, guitar playing, cat herding, cabinetry.. you my dear are a man for all seasons. All will be well in time. A kind and generous soul like yours can't be a loose ends but for so long.
Sling. . . . . Now wait a minute! What is sweet Danny saying? If needed, you can always call on Texas Belles. Right Granny?
you positive attitue keeps me going. Here is to a bloody marry and date time TV (but just for a little while)
I'm sorry to hear about the job. Hang in there because something will turn up soon.
You guys are terrific!..but you already know that. :)
This ain't nothin' new under the sun for me.I've learned to hope for the best, and plan for the worst.
You can bet there will be much guitar playing, reading, writing, and taking time to explore new things involved.
Damn, sorry to hear that. Your boss seems extraordinarily decent, I hope business returns...until then, there's always busking.
Exactly! (Pick any of the above and I'm happy to be part of the chorus.) You are not a renaissance man for nothing.
I particularly like that gigging thing. How many musicians can play AND write a good tale? Hm? Not so many.
Oh and now, of course, I see that that was your plan all along.
Now, off to my job of envisioning you shaping all those talents and skills into one happy explosion. Not THAT kind of explosion. The other kind.
Hey, if you need any help or want to venture into any thing I do, please say so.
betcha ass austexgrl.
I just got back and now to read this. What can anyone say. You must have felt like you'd had a kick in the teeth, but not from your boss.
I hope you are okay and don't have to do without too many essentials.
One thing that would be cheap to do is to write... you write beautifully and ,anys the time I've shed a tear or laughed myself sick at some of your comments.
Just two hours a day... I can imagine that the life story of Sling, sanitised a bit if needs must...would be a historical documentation of the times we lived in.
You do it in five year bits or seven year bits in your case and loose leaf or on computer (but back up backup) and just write, first memories, what the kitchen lino looked like even... if not a seller, than a wonderful record for your people, and who knows...
Oy.
And vey.
And oy vey.
Although, one continues to bless the K's for their goodness.
Maybe, in your off time, you could manage my blog comments and Facebook account. I can't seem to figure out how to manage anymore.
Sorry just got around to checking posts so I'm a bit late on this.
Sorry to hear about the job - but the K's are damned fine people and you know they'll do their best for you and their team.
I'm still trying to figure out what sort of employment Danny was suggesting but YDG (if I may call her that) has so great ideas there.
Hang in my friend, a good man is hard to keep down - oh wait a minute I think I may have figured out what Danny was talking about! Bad Danny! Bad!
