Give it a shot..

I have a new hobby!
Well,it's more like a goal.
Actually,..it's more like a fantasy,whose attainment is a goal I'm making my new hobby..Anywhiz,..
I fully intend to get a photograph of some sort published in National Geographic Magazine!

'What manner of madness is this!?!',..you ask.

First of all,..you guys talk funny.
But,I do understand your incredulity.
Turns out,NatGeo actually solicits reader submissions for their 'Your Shot' photo campaign!

Each weekday,(Monday-Friday),they select a 'Daily Dozen' from the buttloads of reader submissions,to post on the above underlined link.
From these, two photos are selected to be featured in their monthly issue.
The helluvit is,you may only submit one photo a month.

So,..I guess my first objective is to make the Daily Dozen.

I don't know how many submissions they get each month,..But I do know this!
..Twelve a day,times five days a week,times four weeks a month,divided by two,(Subtract the nine,..carry the seventeen),..makes the odds of getting published 1 in 120!!
That's way better than the odds of winning the lottery..(Although, there's no actual talent involved in winning the lottery,..but we won't let that deter us).

I like to think I can take a 'pretty' picture..

Maybe sometimes,..an 'artsy' picture..

..Even the occasional 'whimsical' picture..

Now,if I can just manage to take an iconic picture,..I'll be up to my ass in the fame and adulation that having a photo published in NatGeo quite naturally deserves!

That's why I'm calling this whole endeavor a hobby..It's not anything I could do to earn my daily Sheckels, but there's an enormous amount of satisfaction in the effort.

Miss HP- Thanks kid..I don't actually have any illusions about getting featured, but it's fun checking the Daily Dozen, just in case. ;)

Jan- Sorry..I fully intend to be an insufferable bastard if this pans out.

Yellerdawg- I submitted one last month, and one this month..None of the one's on my post, but I think I'll try submitting the dog-on-shoulder one next month.

Billy P.- All I have is a ton of naked asian cheerleaders..No Africa ones..Sorry.

Rosie- I have one of me naked bowling, but it's already been published.

JP- I know!..Mention naked and they all come outta the woodwork!

I think that stone one would be cool blown up to poster size.

Secret Agent Woman- That's a picture of a retaining wall that I flipped 90 degrees.
You know, part of the reason I posted this was because so many of my blogpals take photos that are easily as good, and better than the Daily Dozen, and maybe they might like to submit some of their own stuff for fun..just sayin'.

All awesome but my personal favorite is the bottom one, a man and his dog after a long weekend of abalone hunting (fishing). Writing, photography, musician... Sling you are a man of many talents. But we knew that.

I agree with random thinker - you couldn't make that one happen if you tried. - good luck

I'm really excited and convinced that you'll turn this hobby into a career as a photojournalist. I think being a photojournalist must be the very best gig in the world - who's better equipped for it than you? Seriously.

As an aside, do you think you can plan for an iconic shot or do you think that's a sort of editorial skill?

Thinker- That's my favorite one so far too..It's got a few appealing elements. :)

Middle Child- Spontaneity is one of the elements I think makes it work..Still,if you go to the link, you see a ton of photos that kick it's ass.

Mom- You may be in for a long wait Mom.

Booda Babe- Oh,I'm convinced it isn't anything that can be planned.
When you look at really, really good pix,you can tell there's a buttload of events that have to conspire to make the shot, and then I think editorial skills are surely needed to get the finished product.
All this is what makes it fun,you see!
